Then again....

And then again, it would be disingenuous for me to suggest that I was not, at least at some level, happier in New York than I have been here. The truth is, I prefer living in neighborhoods that aren't trendy or fun. There aren't drunk douchebags yelling under your window on Friday nights.

The problem is that it's hard to find neighborhoods that are architecturally beautiful and walkable without all the trendy stuff.

I think your last sentence may be the definition of Lakewood ;)

Yeah, there's no drunk douchebags in Lakewood, either.

Here in New York, I find most neighborhoods ugly. A few interesting buildings get sprinkled among the bland, brick, and soviet-style apartment buildings.

Before moving here, I lived in Montreal - a city with an inverse ratio of ugly to aesthetically pleasing buildings. The buildings on any given Montreal street have slightly different hues, different architectural features, places to hang out, and outdoor stairways In my opinion, the buildings in the poor neighborhoods of Montreal look nicer than the rich neighborhoods of New York.

It makes the city so much more livable and less dreary. My question is: how come some cities figure this out and some cities don't?
