The challenge works
Today's cleveland.com story about tuition at Oberlin is the best example I've seen yet about why you should take my cleveland.com challenge. After a few typical knee-jerk potshots, the discussion starts to approach intelligence! Why? Because intelligent people join in the conversation -- and the stock negative one-liners peter out considerably.

I'm taking the challenge. I think the way I read cleveland.com could be classified as insanity. I'm doing the same thing over and over expecting to get different results. I always find myself scrolling down to read the comments even though I know I will leave disappointed. And I leave without posting. Maybe if I take the time to register I can provide comments, either for or against things, but at least real comments or ideas.
You have to have a thick skin to read the comments. A thick skin, a lot of skepticism, a sense of humor, a dose of empathy (a lot of these people are, IMO, coming from a position where they've been knocked around - often unfairly - by life), and you've also got to be judicious about leaving comments. You've got to learn what types of discussions are worth returning to, and which types of discussions are just worth dropping your "good sense" bomb and high-tailing it out of there.
Good luck!
