Cleveland Pizza Week Begins!

Today is the first day of Cleveland Pizza Week. Since me : pizza :: Cookie Monster : cookies, this is destined to become the most important week of the year for me, perhaps second to Thanksgiving week -- although I'm sure I could easily turn Thanksgiving into a sort of Cleveland Pizza Week II.

(During the year I lived in Montana, I developed an addiction to Safeway-brand frozen pizzas, which you can't get out here because we have no Safeways. That Thanksgiving I made turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and Safeway pizza. Thanksgiving proved itself very pizzable.)

So. Let's talk tomato pies this week, shall we? Where are your favorite (and least favorite) places? Is it possible to determine what the "best" pizza really is? What do you drink with your pizza? What is your best (or worst) pizza-related memory? Ever make your own pie?

Stay tuned for more coverage! Up next: does Guy's big New York-style measure up to my beloved Alba's in Queens....

I live about 45 feet from Ohio City Pizza and haven't had it in years. It's that bad. Finally found a place I actively like, Papa Nick's, out towards 117th but still in Cleveland proper. It's the West Side version of Mama Santa's. There's a place that delivers here on Clark called Fabio's. Good pie but WAY too expensive.

Pizza Pan is acceptable and the new Next Door place in Tremont seems pretty good. Big Guy's was our go-to but it's not spectacular and doesn't deliver

Still looking for my near west side solution.

Should mention that Bar Cento is usu. excellent... but we're practically talking about a different food.

I lol'd at your pizza-cookie-monster analogy, great stuff. :)

Here's a little east-sider POV on the pizza situation. Via Van Aken (Formerly the Italian Cafe in Shaker Heights, new owners, new chefs) has the best pizza : the "signature pizza" alfredo, chicken, brocolli, bacon. O.M.G. drool. Geraci's definitely a close second. They have been around forever! New place, Pizza BOGO on Taylor in Cleveland Heights also makes for excellent pizza consumption.

Pizza dont's: Guys Pizza Coventry (as much as i loved them 2 years ago, i got food poisoning there twice in a two month period of time, just recently. Also, as much as people LOVE Mama Santas in Little Italy, I think their pizza crust always tastes like a cardboard box. But other than pizza they're pretty solid.

Yeah, Bar Cento just doesn't count.

I'm glad you found Papa Nick's! This is about my favorite place in Cleveland, probably even more so than Angelo's in Lakewood because I can't take it as greasy as I usedtacould.

I have also, unfortunately, never had a good experience with OC Pizza, which is too bad because I know they've had it rough. I've eaten a lot of frozen and homemade pizza since living in Ohio City. Which is ok, but there's just some kind of magic to getting that cardboard box.

Speaking of homemade, we just made some pizza with Gallucci's dough, instead of the usual Trader Joe's -- definitely better stuff.

The only real New York style pizza in town that I have found is Vincenza's downtown. The family is straight outta Brooklyn and the pizza is top notch. Unfortunately they are only open during the day on weekdays.
