Five Reasons to Love the West Side Market

1. Urban Herbs has fancy finishing salts in bulk, so you don't have to spend a lot of money just to try something luxurious and different.

2. Real Hungarian peppers. I kid you not, I could never find real Hungarian peppers in New York, not anywhere. I had to make goulash with Italian peppers. (Wussy goulash.) [note: don't start with me about whether "authentic" Hungarian goulash should be made with peppers, unless you want to hear about how "authentic" Hungarian goulash should also be properly prepared with bear fat. I don't get into cooking squabbles; maybe when I'm 80.]

3. An abundance of oranges. In a fit of nostalgia for my extravagant New York lifestyle, I broke down and looked at the FreshDirect site yesterday to see what I was missing. You know what I'm missing? Paying $1.29 per orange. Yeah, you read that right. Not per pound, per tasty spherical orange fruit. On Saturday I paid $2 for 10 of those juicy little planetoids at the West Side Market.

4. Stroopies. Get them at Mediterranean Imports. You can eat them as is, but why do that when you can rest them on top of your steaming cup of coffee, tea, or hot chocolate until the syrup inside melts into something warm, gooey, and delicious?

5. Rabbits: the edible pet. I've never seen rabbit sold anywhere else in Northeast Ohio, but on the weekends they've got 'em at Kaufman Corners.

Never heard of Stroopies! Going to have to ferret one out there! I don't know the name of the corner stall with Korean food but it's in my top five. Even if, due to my lack of orientation, I have to wander around every time I go to the market to find it. :-)

Stroopies come in little packs of maybe 10-12, and they're on a middle shelf in the aisle with the German cookies and marzipan and such. If you see pfeffernusse, you're getting close.

At Rita's, in the WSM, we've been getting these half-sours (pickles). Rita's doesn't call them half-sours, but it strikes me that that's what they are. Some days they're ok, and other days they're *really good*. The only other source that I know of in the area is Corky and Lenny's.

Since we moved closer to the market and started buying bread there regularly, grocery store bread is a big disappointment. Nice problem to have. :)

*Someone* in my household doesn't like pickles. :(

I have to admit I'm a bit of a bread snob...I make my own as often as possible. But I also like the onion rye at Theresa's. Today I had some for lunch with swiss steak (good for sopping up gravy), and I had some for dinner with borscht and pierogies (from the Palace, of course!)

Yes my fav WSM bread vendor is Christopher's. They have a country italian bread (brain fart due to long day but will come back with name in a day or two lol)

Jeanne, Corky and Lenny's pickles and pickled tomatoes rock. Now I'm hungry!

Tim and I LOVE the West Side Market. Have any of you tried Michelle's Bakery in the corner by the West Side Market Cafe which by the way has the BEST eggs benedict in the city? Michelle uses unbleached flour for her breads better for you and tastes great. I have so many other favorites that I think I need to do a post.

Last weekend we found wild shrimp at one of the seafood stands. Yum!

Our kids always put the West side market on the itinerary when they come home for a visit.
