Yes, Go to Liberty Books

I feel compelled to reiterate John Ettorre's comment here:
After driving by [Liberty Books] several times, I finally made it in there for a two-hour visit last week, and found it to be easily among the best bookstore experiences in the Cleveland area. Everything about it is appealing--from the massive magazine section, to the high ceilings and free coffee and tea to the staff that doesn't bug you. Just a first-class experience. [emphasis mine]

Liberty Books is located at:

19300 Detroit Rd

Rocky River, OH 44116

You can call them at (216) 458-5860

It's in Beachcliff Market Square.

Here are driving directions.

Christmas shopping season is about to start, folks.....

I've not yet had the opportunity to check out Liberty Books, but I will soon after reading your/John's post. I've been living in Cleveland (Ohio City) for about 3 months and have been overjoyed by the independent bookstore scene and community so far. Between Visible Voice, Mac's Backs, and the store on W. 25th, I end up buying 2-3 books a week. The energy between these stores (and others) is awesome, too, with all the sponsored poetry readings and literary events (like the jam-packed weekend of Kerouac a few weeks ago). Yet another awesome thing Cleveland has going for it!

Hi Cleveland Bachelor- thanks for stopping by. I hope, in addition to buying lots of books, that you're also going to the library! The CLEVNET consortium (which includes Cleveland Public Library and a few dozen other libraries in Northern Ohio) has an amazing collection, much better than the New York Public Library, IMHO.

Ohio libraries in general are awesome, because of the state-administered Library and Local Government Support Fund (LLGSF), which sort of levels the playing field, allowing libraries in poorer areas to develop their collections a little better (and, in many cases, stay open).

You can read a PDF of the history of library funding here.

As a new Ohio resident and book-lover, you should know that the Ohio legislature tries to eliminate the LLGSF from time to time. This would be utterly catastrophic for Ohio libraries.

I have a Google News Alert for LLGSF, you can also (kind of) keep up with it on the Ohio Library Council site, though the site is very librarian-centric. They do have some fact sheets about Ohio libraries.

Next time they start talking about yanking LLGSF, let your Ohio state rep and senator know how you feel about libraries.

CB, you have an interesting site. I've bookmarked it to keep an eye on your progress. And I'm glad to learn from your profile that you're close to accepting your identity as a writer. Also glad to read that you made it to hear Ruhlman the other day.

As for great independents, don't forget to sometime hit the Big Five of great east-side suburban bookstores when you can: Appletree Books at Cedar-Fairmount in Cleveland Heights, Fireside in Chagrin Falls, Loganberry Books in the Larchmere neighborhood just north of Shaker Square, Learned Owl in Hudson (but be warned, it closes absurdly early in the evening, at 6 p.m. I think) and Blue Heron in Peninsula. For your convenience, here are the links (Appletree doesn't have a website):
