Where Should I Eat?

I'm going out to dinner with some friends this weekend, and there are just too many choices. Seriously, I'm like a kid in a candy store. Too many options, I can't pick one, and all four of us are horrible deciders.

So I'm taking recommendations...where should we go? I want to be adventurous and get out of Ohio City. Just pretend you're recommending your must-go restaurant to someone who's only going to be in town for one weekend. (Unless your must-go restaurant is in Ohio City, that is. Then pick something else.)

What kind of food are you looking for? There are some GREAT restaurants in Shaker Square...

Sarava (Brazilian)
Luchitas (Mexican)
Fire (?)

Also some great places in Coventry
Mint Cafe (Thai)
Hunan (Chinese)

I would say Lolita but you'll probably never get a reservation for this weekend.

One of my favorite places is Siam Cafe on St. Clair. Pad thai, siam scallops, vegetable curry, shrimp won ton, dumplings, spring rolls - all delicious!

classic Italian fare - Pepper's in Lakewood, on Detroit near Kovachy Brother's...

Come to Collinwood. Try the Grovewood Tavern or Bistro 185. I'd also recommend the Beach Club Bistro too if you're in the mood for 'za

all very good suggestions so far - thank you! we may go over to see the shaker square tree lighting tomorrow, so luchita's would be good. i used to live right around the corner from where mint cafe is now - only then, it was soul vegetarian. i'm going to have to get over there and try it.

george- thanks for reminding me about the grovewood; it's probably the #1 restaurant i always wanted to get to but never quite did before we moved away. we're going out to the beachland next month, so we'll definitely hit it up then. their menu looks good - i'm intrigued by this lavender chicken....

holly - i wish i would've gone to lolita before this whole iron chef thing! ack....

I'm new to Cleveland. Where is the good Indian food?

I second the beachclub bistro if you're in the mood for pie on the East side. Grovewood's menu didn't impress me and several friends have had a lousy time with both the restaurant itself and with parking in the neighborhood. I will give them one more chance to impress me, but it will not be soon.

For Mexican my wife and I love Lopez in Cleveland Heights. (Lee just S of Cedar). You can get a table without waiting too long, the food is great, and the management is committed to making sure you leave happy, (though the staff is so-so). While you are out on Lee, you can stop at Parnell's for a beverage before you go home.

If you are staying on the West side, I recommend the Parkview Tavern at the north end of 58th street, at Breakwater. From Detroit, go North until you are about to hit the shoreway. For optimal results, go on Wednesday night after 10pm for the blues jam, or Sunday morning fro the brunch. The bloody Mary's (after 1pm) are outstanding.

Lopez is another one of those places I always meant to go but never did - thanks!

Is Parnell's the place where they have red beet cake? Does anyone know?

I thought it was Jimmy O'Neil's that had the beet cake. For Indian, I like the Udupi Cafe in Parma and Taj Mahal in Richmond Heights.

Thank you George - googling "beet cake" cleveland would've solved my quandary. Even librarians can't think straight in the morning. :)

Oh, ps - you are a model East Sider for being willing to come out to Parma.

Christine, just one caution: Lopez has gotten absurdly expensive for what it provides. You'll get a far better value at Luchita's. I've always found the Grovewood's food to be almost inedible.

I feel compelled to defend the GWT. Last couple of times I was there, the food was great. The Gaucho-style ribeye steak sandwich was excellent, as is the cajun crawdad app. That said, every restaurant has it's ups and downs. We were at the BeachClub Bistro last night. The 'za and calamari app were very tasty.

Maybe I was just spectacularly unlucky at the Grovewood. I do admire the atmosphere there, though.
