What's the Matter with Euclid?
So, I'm pleading west-side ignorance here... why are all the houses in Euclid so freaking cheap? I mean, just look at them all!
Is it the fact that I-90 seems to cut right through it? Does that make it ugly? I think I've been to Euclid maybe once, and I don't remember.
I don't think it would be my car-free urban paradise, but at those prices - especially in such proximity to the lake - I might be persuaded to rethink my dreams.
update: as soon as I posted this, the phrase Euclidean zoning percolated into my consciousness....

Probably has something to do with all the foreclosures in the city. Was over at a friend's new home on Edgecliff Dr. Absolutely beautiful area...
you know, i've got to get out of here before i lose all sense of what's going on in the real world ...
The city's overall downturn. The foreclosures, yes. The crime. The closure of Euclid Square Mall (except for the Dillard's clearinghouse) and all the retail around it. But this doesn't actually explain why its happened. But I know I wouldn't move to Euclid and certainly wouldn't buy property there -- unless it was property with a view of the lake.
I just moved away from Euclid a couple of months ago,Glad I'm out of there as things in my neighborhood were getting a little freaky.Someone tried to break into my house 6 or 7 times over the course of 4 years. Not a very good place to live anymore.Houses are very cheap, but also very hard to sell.I've seen some properties on the market for as long as 3 years! And that's on the "good" side of town. I think in general People who are in the position to buy a home either look at the some of the nicer suburbs,or outside of cuyahoga county all Together ,and generally have no intrest in a declining inner ring suburb.Very sad in a way,Euclid used to be a great place to live. By the way, if anyone is thinking of moving there, steer clear of anything south of I-90,especally the southwestern corner of the city. Take a drive over there and see what I mean.Scary
My guess is that it can be attributed to white flight. It's my understanding that Euclid has become the residence of choice for more and more African-Americans. I believe it's about 30% African-American. When Blacks move in, the For Sale signs go up.
Foreclosures and subprime lending also contribute to the exodus. The real estate is not as beautiful as in other suburbs.
The City of Euclid just lost a court case. It was ruled the city made it impossible for an African-American to get elected to city council, even though African-Americans make up a very large percentage of the city.
I rented in Euclid for four years and never had a problem with crime. My family moved to N. Royalton to be near my son's private school. Since we've moved, there appears to have been a few new businesses built at Lakeshore and E.222nd. I still have family who live there and love it.
