Seven Years Later, I Still Remember
This morning on The Sound of Ideas, Regina Brett led a discussion about the kinds of advice commencement speakers give.
Someone called in and said he didn't remember anything his commencement speaker said, and he didn't know anyone else that did, either.
I do.
My commencement speaker at Cleveland State was Drew Carey.

I'm supposed to tell you all this stuff about how great your future is going to be, but the truth is, I didn't graduate from college and I make a lot more money than any of you are ever going to anyway....

You'll have to forgive him. Drew's a political conservative, and you know how that type seems to have an ingrained need to say exceedingly stupid things from time to time.
Conservative or not, he puts his money where his mouth is -- when I was still working for Smith Barney, one of my clients ran a large wallpaper/paint store locally. Even though he lived in Los Angeles, Drew Carey bought ALL his wallpaper and paint here. Ok, the eco-friendliness of shipping it across the country negates it a bit, but it was a nice example of supporting Cleveland businesses no matter what.
He also comes back to town regularly & visits the privately owned establishments. And he has given/raised tens of thousands to Ohio Libraries.
thanks yellowdaisies, i was going to mention the library thing but you beat me to it.
i should also mention that we got the abbreviated version (csu does like 87 separate commencements, because there are so many graduates). it was hot, and he was probably tired. i'm not a humorless person - indeed, my mom is a comedy writer and you really can't grown up with a mom who's a comedy writer if you don't have a sense of humor. but i've just got to say, i found what he said incredibly tacky.
I graduated from CSU that year and what I remember is that I was in one of the graduations that didn't get Drew Carey as the speaker....I was upset about this, but not so much now.
