Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?

Another thing to love about Ohio....

You (yes, you!) can actually participate in the American Dream of homeownership without being Donald Trump.

Compare the house that my friend Ruth recently bought for $169,000 in Portage County:

Look, it comes with a pond:

A mother-in-law apartment:

A barn:

And can you spy the end of her property? I can't!

Whereas here on the Shore, look what you can get for the exact same price:

(No, they don't both come in the same box. If you don't believe me, check out the listing on Realtor.com - yes, it does say 650 square feet - you're not imagining it!)

You show honestly why things blew up on me at the district center/county system headquarters library I was at in PA. I only was given a contract with an annual salary of US$26,000 that would not increase for at least ten years. Dividing that by 26 pays I would have wound up grossing US$1,000 per bi-weekly payroll. Taking out withholdings for taxes and health insurance I lost a good US$300-US$400 per check (Pennsylvania and where I worked in particular have nasty tax rates at times). The net pay per month was only US$1,200. The problem was out of that net pay almost half would be taken out for just rent which was never under US$450 anywhere near the workplace (near being within 30 miles or the same distance as one would commute from MetroHealth to Painesville). So now, down to US$700 per month to live on and utilities were high so that would have been cut down farther to under US$500. The cheapest places to live were quite a commute from work and during a single week I was approaching US$100 spent on gasoline which would have meant spending US$400 in one month. So for a whole month I would have had to eat for the entire month under US$100.

If I had a job out on the shore like you in your system but got paid like I did in PA I could not make it. During the single week I worked in PA trying to stretch my dollars out my bodyweight fell due to eating little and just my nerves from about 185 to around 165. Since I could not live out of a car I had to become a "boomerang kid" which is where I have been since.

Housing combined with low pay kills. Unfortunately that being the reason why I left my job in PA has haunted me ever since...
